Looking for an Opal Alternative? A Pause Instead of a Block
If Opal's blocks have started to feel like something to fight, Phoneless Garden is an alternative built on the opposite idea. Opal blocks apps on a schedule or for focus sessions, and its Deep Focus mode won't let you cancel. Phoneless Garden never locks you out: a calm pause appears when you open an app you chose and again when your time is up, and you decide each time. There is no score, no gems, no streaks and no account.
What does Opal do?
Opal is a screen time app for iPhone, Android, Mac and Windows. According to its App Store listing, it blocks the apps and websites you choose at set times, runs focus sessions for a set block of time, and offers Deep Focus, a Premium mode that won't let you cancel or bypass at all. It gives you a daily Opal Score across focus, sleep and rest, and rewards progress with milestones called gems and daily streaks. An account is needed to sync data and use Pro features.
Blocking works by taking the choice away. That is exactly why many people end up fighting it, an effect psychologists call reactance, and why blockers are so often switched off or deleted. I wrote about the research in why a pause works where blockers fail.
How is Phoneless Garden different?
A pause, never a wall
When you open an app you chose, a pause appears with your time on these apps today and two buttons: close the app, or continue. If you continue, you choose how long. When that time is up, the pause comes back, even mid-scroll, and you choose again.
No score to chase
There is no daily score, no gems and no streaks. Insights show how often you open your apps, how often you paused and how your mood and your phone time go together, as counts rather than grades.
A goal that is kind
Your daily goal is a reference point, not a limit. Within it, Leafy, your plant, is happy. Past it, Leafy rests. It never wilts, and nothing locks.
No account at all
There is no signup, no email and no server. Your usage data, moods and settings stay on your phone.

Which one should you choose?
If you want to keep using your apps but notice when a quick check becomes an hour, Phoneless Garden is the better fit. It gives you the moment to stop that a block promises, without the fight that makes blocks hard to live with.
Opal makes sense in a narrower case: if an app must be completely unavailable for a set stretch, such as an exam or a work shift, or you need to block websites on a computer, a hard block is the tool built for that.
How to switch from Opal
- Install Phoneless Garden and choose the apps you had on your Opal blocklist.
- Turn off Opal's rules for those apps, so the pause is not hidden behind a block.
- Pick a daily goal close to your usual time. There is no right number, and you can change it any day.
